Frequently Asked Questions

Tryouts

Tryouts usually run the second week of August.  All athletes are expected to be present from 10am-4pm at the MHS West gym.

Team placement is done on that Friday.

Students placed on a team are required to attend 10am-4pm preseason training the following week, and then the weekday practices switch to a 3-5:30pm time. Players placed on the varsity also attend practice or scrimmages on all Saturdays during the preseason.

Students must complete online registration and be cleared by the athletic office before being allowed to tryout.  Participants must have appropriate gym shoes and a t-shirt with sleeves that is long enough to tuck into their shorts.

Can 7th and 8th graders tryout for high school volleyball?

1) Yes, 7th and 8th graders are eligible to tryout for the high school program.  They must make the JV or Varsity--they are not eligible to be placed on the sophomore or 9th grade teams.

2) The 7th or 8th grader must be a significantly better fit for the team than the 11th or 12th grader she would displace, in order to be considered for the JV or varsity--unless there is an extreme lack of candidates at the tryout.

3) The level of play at the JV and Varsity level in the Lake Conference is very physical in comparison to middle school and 14's JO.  Would the 7th or 8th grader be able to succeed with the physical play at the JV or Varsity level? A good rule of thumb to follow is: If the 7th or 8th grader was to play in a solid 17's JO match - would they be one of the better players relative to the skill level?

4) Would the student and family be okay, emotionally and intellectually, with the student making the team, and regularly being in a social situation with 17 year olds?  Conversely, would the student and family be okay, emotionally and intellectually, with the student not making the team?

5) High school VB practice during the school year begins at 3pm.  Does the middle school student have a plan to meet practice time attendance requirements?

If the student feels they meet all of these conditions, the coaching staff will evaluate the player during summer sessions and make the final decision.
